From 20 to 25 September 2026, Pescasseroli hosts the 29th International Conference on Bear Research and Management, organised by the International Association for Bear Research and Management (IBA), held alongside the closing conference of the LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors project. The two events share the same thread: human–bear coexistence.

In the heart of the Central Apennines, home to the Marsican brown bear — one of the rarest bear populations in the world — researchers, authorities, NGOs and local communities come together to compare data and conflict-management strategies, with particular focus on the Bear-Smart Community model tested and expanded across the Apennines.

Pescasseroli, long recognised as the "capital" of the Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise National Park, becomes, for one week, the international reference point for bear conservation.

Conference shuttle from Rome

The conference organisation offers a shuttle between Rome Fiumicino Airport and Pescasseroli, at participants’ own expense. It is the simplest option — and the safest choice for arrivals and departures over the weekend, when public transport to and from the village is very limited.

Please note the shuttle departs from Rome Fiumicino - Leonardo Da Vinci Airport (FCO), not from the city centre. If you are staying in central Rome, travel out to Leonardo Da Vinci Airport Terminal 3 Bus first and board the shuttle there. The transfer takes approximately 3.30h to Pescasseroli.

Conference shuttle from Avezzano

If you prefer to travel on your own, Avezzano is the gateway to the park. The conference organisation runs a dedicated bus from Avezzano Bus Terminal to Pescasseroli, at participants' own expense, timed to meet the main arrivals.

Avezzano Terminal Bus is connected to Rome Termini and Rome Tiburtina by Trenitalia regional services, with a journey time of roughly two hours. From Avezzano railway station the bus terminal is a short walk away.

Prontobus and LineaRoma operate services to Avezzano from central Rome and from both Rome airports, Fiumicino and Ciampino. TUA runs the regional network within Abruzzo. Please note that TUA's scheduled service between Avezzano and Pescasseroli is very limited, with no service on Sundays.

The transfer takes approximately 1.30h. If your arrival or departure does not match our dedicated bus, please contact us before booking your travel: we will help you find a workable connection.

Return shuttle from Pescasseroli

At the end of the conference the shuttle will run in the opposite direction, from Pescasseroli to Avezzano Terminal Bus and Rome Fiumicino Airport.

The transfer takes approximately 1.30h to Avezzano Terminal Bus and 3.30h to Rome Fiumicino - Leonardo Da Vinci Airport (FCO), road conditions permitting. When booking your return flight, please allow a comfortable margin between the scheduled arrival at the airport and your check-in time.
