Demanding and spectacular, the hike from Pescasseroli to the Rifugio di Iorio and along the ridge dividing Lazio from Abruzzo is a magnificent traverse, offering a sweeping view over the summits of the Central Apennines.

The gentle rise and fall of the Iorio Ridge alternates with the impenetrable forests of Coppo del Principe and Vallone della Strega, which at over 1,800 metres above sea level shelter the elusive animals of the woods down to the last hidden corner. The satisfaction of reaching the four summits along the ridge outweighs the tiredness in your legs. You come back footsore, but with a full heart.

The hike along the Creste di Iorio from Pescasseroli is suited to people in good physical shape, used to walking in the mountains for a full day, including on varied terrain that alternates beech forests, open ridgeline and long panoramic traverses, with a significant distance and elevation gain (18 km, around 840 m uphill and downhill). No technical mountaineering experience is required, but the hike is recommended for those who have already tackled moderately difficult trails and want to walk the watershed dividing Lazio from Abruzzo, crossing four summits with views over the Marsica, the Alto Sangro and the whole chain of the Monti Marsicani. Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support and a grippy sole are essential.
