Mount Sirente captivates and enchants every hiker. A mountain of two faces and the geographical heart of the Abruzzo highlands, it separates the cool Altopiano delle Rocche plateau from the warm Sulmona basin: seen from L'Aquila or the Gran Sasso, it presents an imposing rocky bastion of spurs and ridges sheltering snow-filled gullies well into early summer; those who climb the opposite slope discover a karst mountain of gentle humps, open plateaus and silent valleys, dominating the villages of the plain with the image of a solemn, infinite massif.

In spring, the brilliant green of the high-altitude meadows is streaked with bright tongues of snow that, as the season advances, give way to magnificent wildflower blooms. In autumn, the warm colours of the beech forest set off the towering rock faces that define the entire ridge. A striking high-altitude hike through the Valle Lupara leads to the discovery of this solemn summit, crossing steep gullies, rocky amphitheatres and panoramic terraces — with views over the Gran Sasso, the Majella and the Velino — where a sighting of the Apennine chamois is always possible.

Highlights

The rocks of the Sirente tell the story of a tropical sea: Lower Cretaceous organogenic limestones, compact and fossil-rich, formed in warm shallow waters not unlike the present-day Bahamas.
On the north-east face, Quaternary glacial cirques still shape the mountain's profile. Added to these geological traces is a curiosity unique in Italy: a meteorite impact crater, today a small lake roughly 140 metres in diameter.
The wooded slopes of the Sirente form one of the most important wildlife corridors in the Central Apennines, roamed by wolves, Marsican brown bears, red deer and roe deer.
Since 2013, the Apennine chamois reintroduction has been under way: the population now numbers over 70 individuals.

No technical mountaineering experience is required, but the hike is recommended for those who have already tackled moderately difficult trails and wish to reach an exceptional panoramic summit with views across the entire Central Apennines. In the heart of the Central Apennines, the Sirente-Velino Regional Nature Park is one of the most extensive and varied protected areas in Italy: over 54,000 hectares encompassing two great massifs — the Velino (2,486 m) and the Sirente (2,348 m) — and a remarkable range of environments, from the karst plateaus of the Altopiano delle Rocche and Piani di Pezza to ancient beech forests, from glacial U-shaped valleys to gorges and canyons carved into limestone. The park acts as a wildlife corridor between the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park to the south-east and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park to the north, making the Sirente-Velino massif one of the most important ecological corridors in the entire Apennine chain.

The richness of the territory is also measured in numbers: 1,570 plant species recorded, including rare endemics such as Astragalus aquilanus, Viola eugeniae and wild peony; 216 vertebrate species, among them golden eagles, griffon vultures, peregrine falcons and eagle owls. The forests and rock faces are home to Marsican brown bears, Apennine wolves and red deer, while since 2013 the Apennine chamois has returned to roam the ridges of the Sirente, thanks to a reintroduction programme that today counts over 70 individuals. Karst processes continue to shape the landscape: sinkholes, dolines, caves and the spectacular Celano Gorge are its most striking expression.
