Umberto Esposito

He's lived in the historic area of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park since he was a kid. After finishing his studies, he began a career as a nature guide, first obtaining the title of hiking instructor in the Abruzzo Region Alpine Guides Register, then becoming an International Mountain Leader (UIMLA), combining two great passions into one profession: nature and photography.

In 2009, he founded Wildlife Adventures, a company specialising in education, hiking, and travel, with the aim of bringing people closer to nature.

He's written several successful campaigns and often works with Protected Areas and NGOs in Italy and across Europe. In 2017, he teamed up with Bruno D'Amicis, and after spending years working in the oldest beech forests in Europe, he published the multimedia project Il battito della foresta, followed by the book Il Segreto dei Giganti. He's also co-author of the guide Vivi il Parco – Alla scoperta del Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, which is essentially like having an experienced hiking companion to guide you through Italy's first protected natural area.

The history of bears in the Apennines is closely connected to that of the mountains themselves, and the current situation is the result of a cultural evolution in which humans and bears have had to adapt to one another and, ultimately, learn to coexist.

Since 2020, he's been working on the content for the project L'Orso e la Formica (The Bear and the Ant), which—as the name suggests—aims to highlight the countless, often overlooked connections between the bear and the many other species with which it shares its world. Together with Elisabetta Tosoni and Bruno D'Amicis, he's been developing this project with the goal of bringing people and nature closer together, and encouraging more people to get involved in protecting the bear and its environment.
