In September, as autumn begins to paint the forests in warm hues, nature awakens in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park with one of the most powerful and emotional wildlife events in the entire Apennine range: the red deer rutting season. Adult males, driven by their reproductive instinct, engage in spectacular displays of combat and courtship, fighting to gain dominance and attract females.

This ancient and fascinating behavior can be observed — with respect and discretion — during guided excursions in some of the Park’s most exclusive and untouched areas. In the southern sector of the Park, we’ll explore the wild ridges and trails of the Monti della Meta, a mountain range known for its pristine nature, rich biodiversity and remote, wilderness atmosphere.

We’ll hike through ancient beech forests, alpine meadows and panoramic ridgelines, accompanied by experienced guides who will lead us to the best observation points — where we’ll wait in silence and patience for the forest to echo with the powerful calls of the deer. Imagine standing in a silent forest at dawn, when the first ray of sunlight filters through golden beech leaves and the air begins to vibrate with the deep, echoing bray of a stag. Every sound, every shadow, every rustle in the undergrowth tells an ancient story — of rivalry, courtship and survival.

Our overnight stay is at Rifugio di Campitelli, a welcoming mountain hut surrounded by nature, perfect for those seeking an authentic and peaceful experience, far from the noise of everyday life. Here, the night is still true: a starry sky above, a deep and ancient silence around, broken only by the calls of deer in love. At dawn and dusk, we’ll share moments of profound connection with the wilderness.

We’ll settle in at scenic observation spots, with the chance to observe and photograph stags battling for dominance, herds on the move, and breathtaking autumn landscapes. An authentic, intense and unforgettable hiking experience — perfect for those who love the mountains, wildlife photography, and the rhythm of the changing seasons.

DAY 1 – The Rut and the Rituals of the Deer

Meeting with the guide at Pianoro Campitelli and introduction to the program. Accommodation in the mountain hut. At 3:00 p.m., departure for an evening excursion to listen to the rutting calls and observe deer at sunset. Return to the hut, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2 – A true wilderness area

Before dawn, we’ll have a quick breakfast and set off under the stars for a high-altitude excursion to reach the rutting arenas. Crossing ancient beech forests, we’ll begin to hear the calls of the deer growing stronger and closer as we approach. Picnic lunch during the hike. Return to the hut is planned in the afternoon, with time to collect your gear before departure.

Essential tips and useful details for a smooth and enjoyable stay

Temperatures can range from +0°C to +20°C. We recommend that you bring warm, easily removable clothing, allowing you to adapt and remain comfortable throughout the tour. Waterproof hiking boots are mandatory and you will not be allowed to join the excursion if you do not have them.

Surrounded by majestic beech trees, Alfedena’s Rifugio Campitelli is a warm and welcoming place, perfect for those who wish to immerse themselves in the wild beauty of the Meta Mountains. Situated at the foot of this imposing mountain range, the refuge offers a comfortable and welcoming retreat where you can regenerate after a day spent exploring the surrounding trails. Built from natural materials, the lodge reflects the traditional architecture of the region, creating an intimate and homely atmosphere. The interiors are rustic, with windows offering relaxing views of the lush greenery of the forest. The warmth of the wood and the crackle of the wood-burning stove welcome guests, creating an ideal environment to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of nature. It has 10 comfortable beds, linen, electricity from renewable sources, toilets and hot water.
