3th January 2020 - 6th January 2020

Within its borders, Abruzzo keeps a variety of natural environments which you can’t find anywhere else in Europe, in equally man-made territories. Surprising and fascinating environments, able to feed our spirit of adventure. Our programmes have something for any kind of interest, and let you experience the closest contact with nature.

🇬🇧 We love winter ❤️. During the last weeks we worked so hard in order to store food and firewood in the mountain huts. Commonly known as Prato Rosso shelter, this refuge is situated at 1536 metres above sea level and it is surrounded by one of the most interesting and beautiful beech forests of the Abruzzo National Park territory. It was built in the thirties for the wish of the Park’s founder Erminio Sipari and it is the only shelter owned by the Park on the left bank of Sangro River. The shelter was built with stone and cement by local workers. On the ground floor there is a kitchen, a fireplace and a little bathroom; a ladder allows you to go up to a double wooden loft and to the dormitory, with 9 comfortable beds.

.
.
🇬🇧 Bears and wolves are not the only wonders characterising the fauna of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. There is another wonderful creature, which is considered one of the rarest animal species in Italy. We are talking about the Apennine chamois, “glacial relic” which almost miraculously survived its extinction. In the early 1900s, in this area, which later became the Abruzzo National Park, just over 30 specimens survived, a number too low to guarantee the survival of the species. One hundred years later, we can share one of the most beautiful stories in the history of Italian nature conservation.

.
In November a advanced workshop of nature photography for a few participants; then, a fairytale atmosphere to concentrate fully on searching Apennine chamois, defined by zoologists “the most beautiful chamois of the world” in the best period of the year. You will live dawns and sunsets, walks and sightings, nights in refuges and days in the most beautiful and less known places of the most ancient protected area of Italy.

.
🇬🇧 During the five years of the multimedia project Forestbeat, in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park we learned that each centuries-old beech is a habitat in itself, a condominium which is crowded from the tip of its roots to the last of its branches. Not even two beech trees are the same. The trees may seem similar in shape and size, the inhabitants of the forest know well on which trees they build their nest or where to look for food, which ones they choose for a night shelter, where they leave their scent or scratch their back. Like this, beeches can also become joints for communication between different species and different individuals.

.
.
🇬🇧 The varied territory and lovely landscape, the huge number of old and local roads, make cycling tourism probably the most complete and penetrating way to explore and understand this region. Pedalling along the many itineraries offered by the rugged mountains, around the lakes or along the flourishing torrent banks, through solemn beech woods or the heaths of infinite highlands, emotions will run strong and memorable, not only for the neophyte butalso for the more skilled and “tough” cyclist. See next tours on www.wildlifeadventures.it 🍄🍂.
